The Effects of Type 2 Diabetes on Brain Function Study
Description: In this study, we are looking at whether people with Type 2 diabetes show early signs of changes in their thinking processes. We are looking for people both with and without type 2 diabetes so we can compare their thinking processes. The study involves 2 visits, one 2-4 hour visit to the Joslin Diabetes Center and one 1 hour visit to Beth Israel Medical Center in Boston. Study procedures involve thinking tests, completing questionnaires, blood tests and a MRI Scan to examine performance on thinking tests.People without a prior diagnosis of diabetes will also be given a sugary drink at their visit to see how their body processes sugar.
Recruiting: Seeking participants between the ages of 45-65 with a diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes who are not on metformin, or TZD's (pioglitazone, rosiglitazone). We are also seeking participants between the ages of 45-65 who have not been diagnosed with Diabetes.

SLIMM T2D Study: Surgery of Lifestyle with Intensive Medical Management in the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes
Description: We are comparing whether bariatric surgery (weight loss surgery) or a diabetes and intensive medical and weight management program is more effective for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in patients who are modestly overweight.
Participants will be randomized (like the flip of a coin) to surgical or non-surgical treatment.
Participants randomized to surgery will have their surgery performed at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston. Follow up visits for surgical groups can vary based on the type of surgery performed.
Those participants randomized to the Intensive Medical Management program will have several visits at the Joslin Diabetes Center, Boston which include the following:
- Weekly evening meetings over 13 weeks for group education and support led by a physician, diabetes nurse educator, nutritionist, exercise physiologist and behavior counselor
- Monthly follow up visits after 13 weeks
Both surgial and non-surgical groups are followed over three years.
Recruiting: We ae seeking clinical Research Volunteers with type 2 diabetes and excess weight, between 21-65 years of age, who are willing to have bariatric (weight loss) surgery or participate in an intensive medical (non-surgical) diabetes and weight management program.

Are you having gastric bypass surgery? Do you have type 2 diabetes?
We are looking for clinical research volunteers who are going to have a gastric bypass surgery for weight loss at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and who have type 2 diabetes. We are conducting a study on how gastric bypass weight loss surgery helps to improve blood sugars in those with type 2 diabetes.
The study involves 3 visits before your surgery, and 2 visits afterwards. The first visit will be at either Brigham and Women’s Hospital or Joslin Diabetes Center, and all the visits after that will be at Joslin Diabetes Center. During these visits we will study how your body responds to sugar and the hormone insulin.
We are looking for people 21 to 60 years of age. You will be compensated for your time. Please contact us if you would be willing to participate in this important research study.
